Following the Art Appreciation Group meeting yesterday, Kathryn Shaw has written the following review:
The Art Appreciation Group met today to discuss the life and work of Sir Stanley Spencer a prolific and controversial artist of the early 20th century. We were particularly impressed by his ” Men of the Clyde” A series of paintings he did over 6 years in the 40s about workers in the shipyards. His artistic ability and attention to detail was amazing.
Our next outing is on the 15th of August when we will be going to the Museum in South Shields to see an exhibition of the work of L S Lowery. Meet outside at 11.00. This will be followed by fish and chips at Coleman’s for those hungry after culture!
We will be meeting at the Town Hall Seaham at 10.00 am on September 19th. The Art world seems to be dominated by men so we are going to research into women artists and bring our results for discussion and appreciation.
