In 1132 thirteen monks came to Yorkshire to found an abbey that would be one of the richest in Europe. In 2015 ten members of Seaham and District U3A came to view the splendour of Fountains Abbey, the magnificence of the gardens and the newly installed modern sculptures that are the ‘Folly’. It was a magical autumn day to wander through the water gardens to find the huge bird, the ‘Scavenger’ hidden inside the Banqueting House. Our senses were further challenged with the ‘Hall of Mirrors’ occupying the classical Octagon Tower. Lost property was put to good use to make a giant nest placed inside the Temple of Fame. Lastly we discovered the Old Gods dressed in all their finery, feasting in the Temple of Piety. The modern sculptures transformed the Georgian landscaped gardens. After visiting the gardens we to also feasted on a most pleasant lunch and completed our day with a visit to Ripon. An excellent day was had by all.
