Garden outing group visit to
RABY CASTLE AND GARDENS
WEDNESDAY 4TH SEPTEMBER 2024
September’s visit is to Raby Castle which is practically on our doorstep!
Raby is without doubt one of the most impressive intact castles in the North ofEngland. Built in the 14th century by the powerful Neville family, it has a longhistory. Home to Cecily Neville, mother of two kings of England, it was alsothe scene of the plotting of the Rising of the North and a Parliamentary
stronghold during the Civil War. Our visit includes access to the castle where you can wander around at your leisure with stewards in each room to provide information or answer any queries you may have.
The approach to the castle is particularly beautiful as its towers appear and disappear amongst the trees of the surrounding parkland with its ornamental lakes and herds of deer. The exterior with medieval towers, terrace and embattled walls dates back to the 11th Century.
The 18th century Walled Garden has recently been remodelled by renowned garden designer Luciano Giubbilei with Lady Barnard. Together, they have laboured to create a stunning 5-acre vision, including the estate’s well-known yew hedges and the iconic Raby fig. The grounds of Raby Castle also has a
range of wildlife and there is plenty to see including herds of red and fallow deer.
There is also the Vinery Café and Coach House Shop to have a look at.
The cost of the outing is £25 per person. Two mini buses will be going to Raby Castle providing 32 places. They will leave Seaham Harbour (behind Costa Coffee) at 10 am. Deposits of £5 will be taken on Wednesday 31st July with the remainder due at the monthly meeting on the 28th August.
